Gold leaf, and the part you can’t paint

There’s a moment in Glimmer where the paint stops and the gold begins. You lay the leaf down with a breath held — it’s thinner than tissue, and it moves if you so much as look at it wrong. Then the light finds it, and the wing does something acrylic alone never can: it answers the room. Walk past it and it shifts; stand still and it settles.

People assume the gold is decoration. It isn’t. It’s the closest I’ve come to painting the thing that isn’t really there — the flash off a wing, the half-second of shine that makes you turn your head. You can’t paint a flash. But you can leave a little gold where it was, and trust the light to do the rest.
