Why the hummingbird

People ask why the hummingbird turns up in nearly everything I make. The honest answer is that it found me before I chose it.

A hummingbird lives at a speed we can’t quite follow. It hovers — completely present — for one impossible moment, and then it’s gone. That’s the thing I’m forever chasing on the canvas: the instant that won’t hold still, the light that’s already changing by the time you notice it.

So the bird became a kind of signature. Not a mascot — a reminder. Pay attention. Be present. Catch the moment while it’s here, because it isn’t staying.
